Medetomidine, originally developed and introduced to the veterinary market in the late 1980s, is primarily used as a sedative, analgesic, and pre-anesthetic medication for animals. When misused recreationally, its potent pharmacological properties pose significant health risks, including severe bradycardia (slowed heart rate), hypotension (low blood pressure), and respiratory depression. These effects are highly unpredictable and can be life-threatening, especially when combined with other central nervous system depressants like alcohol or opioids.

These test strips can detect medetomidine and dexmedetomidine (a related compound) to help you rule them out in your samples within minutes.

Medetomidine Testing Procedure

  1. Bring tests and samples to room temperature 59-86°F (15-30°C) before use. Pills should be crushed completely and powders mixed thoroughly before testing.
  2. Add 5mL of water (1 teaspoon or about 1 bottle cap) of clean water to a clean container like a cooker, bottle cap, plastic bag or similar.
  3. Dilute the drug to be tested in water. Add 5-10mg of drug sample to 5ml of water using the provided microscoop to help you get the right amount. Extra 10mg microscoops are available should you need them.
  4. Remove the test strip from its sealed pouch and use it as soon as possible. For best results, the test should be performed within one hour.
  5. Hold the strip by the end, where the product name (MED) is printed. To avoid contamination, do not touch the strip membrane (the white section of the strip).
  6. Holding the strip vertically, dip the test strip in the liquid for at least 10-15 seconds. Immerse the strip where the wavy lines are, but not above the solid (maximum) line on the test strip.
  7. Remove the strip from the sample and place it on a non-absorbent flat surface. Start the timer and wait for the colored line(s) to appear.
  8. A negative result can be interpreted as soon as both the test (T) and control (C) lines appear. A positive result can be interpreted once the control line has appeared and the background has cleared to white, typically by 60 seconds. Do not read results after 10 minutes.
